Chris Bartlett Joins ChemFORWARD as Staff Toxicologist, Supporting Scientific and Data Verification Capabilities

ChemFORWARD is pleased to announce Chris Bartlett, Ph.D. will serve as staff toxicologist, broadening the expertise that guides the organization’s assessment, verification and data quality. Bartlett’s contributions will help ensure users receive the most actionable and trustworthy chemical hazard information from the ChemFORWARD platform.

Bartlett has worked with ChemFORWARD as a consultant and verifier and will now add this leadership role to those duties. He will help ChemFORWARD advance the development and adoption of its platform as well as provide valuable judgment to ChemFORWARD’s unique verification and technical dispute resolution process, ensuring the highest quality data makes it onto the platform.

“Chris has already added so much value with his contributions and is certain to strengthen both the science and process of the work we do to provide trusted, verified data about chemical hazards and alternatives,” said Stacy Glass, ChemFORWARD’s executive director. “He will make an immediate impact on our beauty and personal care offering as well as bolstering our work in upcoming electronics and food packaging sector launches.”

He is passionate about developing tools to boost the efficiency of toxicological assessments and to enable technical and non-technical users to make clear decisions about the safe use of materials.

“I’m excited to join a team that is taking a leading role in helping product developers make informed choices about safer alternatives,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett’s background in assessing materials and finished consumer products spans biotechnology, consumer product companies and government agencies. His experience in hazard and safety labelling, maintaining product stewardship guidelines and setting strategies for toxicology testing protocols offers a variety of perspectives to bring to bear on ChemFORWARD users’ needs. His experience in roles from government agencies to cosmetics brands will deliver valuable depth to ChemFORWARD’s work to build and populate a globally harmonized repository of chemical hazard assessments, unlocking choices about safer chemicals and ingredients for industries from beauty and personal care to electronics and food packaging.

Bartlett has supported the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the development of Janus Nonclinical, a tool designed to allow reviewers to analyze study data and create summary tables more efficiently using electronic submission via the Standard for Exchange of Nonclinical Data. He continues to support training of reviewers as the FDA goes through this monumental shift in the review process.

Previously, Bartlett worked at Avon Products, where he was responsible for safety assessment for raw ingredients and final formulations  including U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-regulated insect repellant products. He monitored raw ingredient and product testing and approved-use instructions and warnings for labels to ensure products complied with safety regulations, and that the award-winning skincare, cosmetics, fragrance and personal care company offered safe products to its consumers.

Bartlett earned his doctorate in Toxicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after receiving a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Carnegie Mellon University.
