ChemFORWARD and GreenScreen Offer Aligned Outputs for Hazard Data: ToxServices

ChemFORWARD’s method of assessing chemical hazards and safer alternatives and GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals’ framework offer highly aligned and equivalent outputs. That’s according to a detailed comparison of results from applying the two methods that ToxServices’ Jennifer Tanir presented at the 2021 Society of Toxicology’s Annual Meeting last month.

ChemFORWARD’s method provides more information and can require a higher level of expertise to interpret, Tanir found in her comparison of outputs for a group of 61 plasticizers. ChemFORWARD’s platform includes outputs based on the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Labelling and Classification and Cradle to Cradle Certified Chemical Hazard Ratings and presents the hazards by exposure routes.

“Our team has worked hard to create a tool to scale and streamline trustworthy, accessible data on chemical hazards and safer alternatives while harmonizing with the tools and platforms that already exist,” said Dr. Lauren Heine, ChemFORWARD’s director of science and data integrity. “It is rewarding to see this analysis confirm that our work stands to expand the availability of information needed to make products safer and contribute to a circular economy.”

The GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals is a hazard assessment framework that assesses chemicals against 18 human health, environmental, and physical hazard endpoints, and based on hazard combinations, assigns a benchmark (BM) score of 1-4, with 1 being most hazardous. GreenScreen prioritizes the avoidance of substances with a high hazard, while ChemFORWARD seeks to facilitate discovery and use of safer alternatives.

ToxServices is a global scientific consulting firm providing toxicology, hazard, and risk assessment consulting services to private industry, non-governmental organizations, and the public sector.

Heine co-created and led the development of GreenScreen. ToxServices is among the firms which provide chemical hazard assessments under contract with ChemFORWARD.
