ChemFORWARD Publishes Safer Alternatives to Beauty and Personal Care Chemicals of Concern

ChemFORWARD is pleased to announce a collection of safer alternatives to high-priority chemicals of concern commonly used in the beauty and personal care industry.

ChemFORWARD worked with SEPHORA and other co-design partners to develop 11 portfolios of safer alternatives for preservatives, benzophenones, silicones, and ethanolamines which SEPHORA has identified for reduction and elimination from products it carries, through its public chemicals policy. The collection represents the beginning of a comprehensive library of safer ingredients for beauty and personal care manufacturers.

The clean personal care market is projected to grow to over $25 billion by 2025 according to a survey by Grand View Research, Inc. With no clear standards on clean and natural claims, brands, formulators, and manufacturers of beauty and personal care products are increasingly seeking science to support their ingredient decisions. When provided with trusted, cost-effective information about chemical hazards and safer alternatives, supply chain participants select safer chemicals for their products.

These portfolios afford the developers of beauty and personal care products a thorough, intuitive, and affordable collection of data to make informed substitutions, equipping them to develop products that are safer for humans and better for the environment.

Among the portfolios are alternatives to cyclic silicones, which improve the texture of products but can cause environmental damage, ethanolamines, used in products from shampoo, soap, and shaving cream to make-up, fragrance fixatives which slow the evaporation of perfumes, chelating agents, added to stabilize soaps and other products, surfactants, used to make foam or help products disperse, colorants, emollients such as waxes and oils to soften skin, and skin conditioning agents.

ChemFORWARD is happy to arrange demonstrations of portfolios and an introduction to its unique platform and interface. Please don’t hesitate to contact Lori Bestervelt, ChemFORWARD’s director of toxicology and business integration, for a demo and preview of our v2 platform.
